Understanding PLM
by John Stark
The fourth Monograph in the PLM Monograph 2012 series has been published.

Understanding PLM: What? Why? When? Where? Who? How? explains what PLM is and when it emerged, describes why it's so important, outlines the resources in the scope of PLM, describes the roles of the people involved with PLM, shows where PLM is used, and explains how it's implemented.

The PLM Monograph 2012 Series is a collection of short documents addressing specific aspects of PLM. Each monograph is about 40 pages long, and delivered as an electronic file in PDF format.
The Travelling PLM Manager
by Roger Tempest
Organising the dates for the Benchmark Coaching Workshops (2PLM February 27) has highlighted an interesting question about the empowerment of PLM managers.

Even though these may look like "Conference-type" Workshops, they are in fact working meetings. We are following fairly tight timescales within an overall plan, as you would within an internal PLM environment. We have now agreed the dates, and the first meeting is at Knorr-Bremse in just under 3 weeks' time.

This means that, for the PLM teams that take part, an event has come up in their diaries on 28-29 March and they need to be in Munich. An alternative would be to go to Thales in Paris in April. For those who are not based in Germany or France, this will mean a sudden trip to a different country, and eyebrows may be raised at this "jet setting" behaviour.

However, this should be part of what the PLM Manager and his team are empowered to do. The PLM manager's role is to manage PLM across the whole enterprise, even if that means a global corporation with sites, customers and suppliers in many countries.

Any senior manager or VP would expect to be able to travel around the whole extent of his or her department, or division of the company. For the PLM Manager in a large corporation, the extent of his or her department is the globe.

A lot is talked about the need to empower the PLM Manager with sufficient authority to take PLM into every area of the organisation chart. Does he also need to be empowered to get from A to B?

You can join a discussion about this on Linked In, and find out how to register for the Workshops below.

Benchmark Coaching Workshops - Registration

Knorr-Bremse will host the first PLM Benchmark Coaching Workshop at its Headquarters in Munich, Germany in 3 weeks' time, on 28-29 March 2012. This will be followed by a matching Workshop hosted by Thales at the Thales University, Paris, France on 16-17 April 2012.

Discussions are in progress to run a third event in Ohio, USA during April.

The Coaching Workshops are part of the preparation for the international PLM Governance Benchmark, but are valuable training events in their own right.

Some companies intend to use them to set up internal benchmarks to align the way that their own divisions and global sites are implementing PLM. It does not matter which event you attend - the Agendas are the same, and participants in any will receive the combined results of the series.

Companies based anywhere in the world are welcome to take part. Registration for the Munich and Paris events is now open, and you can find the latest information via the PLMIG web site or by contacting me at coachingworkshop@plmig.com.
