Product Data: Finding It - Using It by Deploying a Search Engine Solution
by Dick Bourke
Part 7: A Year End Status Report

The stated intent of this Search Engine Solutions series was to introduce the basic concepts of Search-Based Applications for engineering and manufacturing enterprises. Moreover, I suggested that experienced practitioners might benefit by "standing back from the trees to look at the forest." A well-experienced industry consultant, Laura Wilber of Exalead affirmed, "Your pragmatic overview of this subject will be of much use to many." My thanks to her for the kind thought.

Comments about Definitions
Since the series began on June 18, 2012, I have gained added insight into enterprise search, SESs, SBAs and more. I would like to share some comments about definitions.

1. Definition of Search Engine Solution
There is no known widely-accepted definition of Search-Based Applications (SBAs) focused on the needs of engineering and manufacturing enterprises.

Therefore, I coined Search Engine Solution (SES) for this series to encompass search and discover, but not analyze - with a qualification.

To qualify as an SES, I posed a criterion, one of many. It must support a collaborative product development (CPD) environment.

Another term (or label) gaining traction is Unified Information Access (UIA), which identifies software with a full range of search, discover and analyze powers. By definition, therefore, UIA falls into the Big Data scene.

2. Big Data
I purposely avoided this subject, as there is an overwhelming amount of information now available. Besides, most current applications of Big Data seem focused on customer-facing activities, such as sentiment analysis.

Interest in application to product development is on the rise according to a recent report - "Product Lifecycle Management and the Data Deluge: Transforming Data to Enhance Performance" by CIMdata, November 2012.

What's Next
Our series will begin again in early 2013.

Best wishes for the holiday season.

Benchmarking, the PLMuERP Way
by Roger Tempest
As outlined in 2PLM Nov. 19, the PLMuERP Workshop series is on course to produce its deliverable, the PLMuERP Handbook, by the end of January. However, that is not the only thing that will have been achieved.

The final Workshop at ZF in Friedrichshafen was such an engine room of ideas that we should carry the format through to 2013 and use it on another complex subject - and the subject that is likely to be most productive is PLM Benchmarking.

This does not mean making simple, "tick-box" comparisons. The 'Workshop series' format covers such depth and detail that we can produce some new, comprehensive metrics.

It means giving PLM Teams from several companies a concentrated, 3-day platform to present their ideas and methodologies to each other; discussing how these have been leveraged to produce business value; and working together as a group to establish what the common parameters are.

It also means providing a structured working framework, (in the form of the PLMIG Benchmarking Handbook), so that the results from each Workshop are comparable and comprehensive.

As described in Capturing PLM Managers' Expertise, the companies that took part in the Coaching Workshop at Thales earlier this year decided that 'Level 1' was the most interesting to start with, and so that will be the format for these events.

If you would like to share detailed presentations with other experienced PLM managers then this format will work very well for you. We may be able to host the events at user companies, to incorporate a factory tour. The group working will be led by the PLMIG, who will also process the results. The flexible programme means that there are no restrictions on company size.

The proposal for this has come from the USA, so we will be able to make transatlantic comparisons. The linked sequence of events will build on each other in the same way that the PLMuERP series has done, which means that you can, in effect, Benchmark with many other companies whilst only having to commit 3 days of time.

If there is sufficient feedback we can arrange the timing to suit the participants. You can find out more, and register your interest, via

Benefits of PLM
by Scott Cleveland
A company purchases PLM software to solve some problem. The cost, annoyance, trouble or whatever irritant of the problem has to be large because implementing a PLM solution is not easy or cheap. PLM software has gotten easier to implement, but the analysis part of the project still takes time and effort from a lot of people.

Implementing a PLM solution using the information gathered in the analysis portion of the project should quickly bring benefits to your company.

Implemented properly, you should see these benefits:

Reduction in Costs - PLM software provides process management tools that can shorten and improve processes cutting costs.

Improved Efficiency - Part of process management is finding better ways to do things. If a company does not see improved efficiency, it is not the fault of the software.

Increase in Customer Satisfaction - This can be seen in 2 different ways either by providing better products/services or by improving interactions with their customers.

Continued Process Improvement - If you have the ability to manage your processes through the use of the PLM process management tools, why wouldn't you keep looking for ways to improve your processes?

Increased Profitability - Success in the 4 areas listed above will result in increased profitability.

  Your Thoughts....
Do you have a problem that can be solved with PLM? Can you put a cost to it?
