PLM Grid & Group
by John Stark
The 2nd edition (2011) of Product Lifecycle Management: 21st Century Paradigm for Product Realisation starts "PLM is the business activity of managing, in the most effective way, a company's products all the way across their lifecycles; from the very first idea for a product all the way through until it is retired and disposed of."

On Page 9, the PLM Grid (pdf) is introduced and explained in a few sentences. On the horizontal axis of the grid are the phases of the product lifecycle. On the vertical axis are the components that have to be addressed when managing a product.

The PLM Grid helps show why the environment of the product can be so difficult to manage. The scope of the environment is broad.

Many subjects are addressed, ranging from methods for identifying ideas for new products, through organisational structure, to end-of-life recycling equipment.

The scope is wide, but that reflects the reality of managing products.

The Grid gives companies that develop and support products a way of visualising PLM.

If you have a PLM role in a discrete or process manufacturing company, and are interested in working with other people to proactively address PLM subjects of common interest, your membership in the Geneva International PLM Group would be welcomed.

Membership of the Group is free of charge. You can join here on LinkedIn. The Group is independent of PLM product and service providers, and focuses on the business, management and organisational issues of Product Lifecycle Management.

Your PLM Vision
by Scott Cleveland
From a John Stark article in his 2PLM Ezine ....
A vision of PLM is needed to provide a clear picture of the future PLM environment. Without a clear PLM Vision, companies can invest heavily in many improvement activities, yet fail to meet their product-related objectives. Development of a PLM Vision is the first step towards making major improvements in product development and support performance.

My Thoughts....
I agree wholeheartedly.

Last week, I discussed steps that a company can take that will increase their chances for success. In another blog, I have said that implementing the software is the easy part while gathering the requirements is the hard part.

I have performed the analysis & design activities for a number of PLM projects. Early on, I learned to uncover the customer's vision for a solution.

A large part of a PLM sale includes managing expectations. If the customer's expectations [vision] for a solution are not possible, you will not have a successful implementation. So what do you do? Should you sign the deal knowing that the implementation will flop? Should you pull out and let the potential customer flop with a competitor?

During early discussions about PLM, I ask the prospect for their vision of a solution. We work from there to talk about what is possible and what is not possible. At some point, the prospect will have altered their vision of a solution to something they are comfortable with and can actually be delivered. That way, we're both winners.

Amazingly, if you deliver what the customer is expecting, you will have a happy customer!

I can't stress enough how important it is to manage your prospect's expectations. Communications plays such an important part in the success of a PLM implementation.

Your PLM project, managed properly, can bring your company some significant financial benefits. Now is a good time to get started.

Your Thoughts....

PLM Governance Benchmark - Time to Join
by Roger Tempest
When Knorr-Bremse decided in 2011 it wanted a comprehensive benchmark of its PLM operations, it seemed an ambitious idea. Knorr-Bremse is the world's leading manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles, and has been implementing enterprise-wide PLM for over a decade. With around $5bn sales, 16000 employees, and operating in almost 30 countries, the scale of a PLM Governance Benchmark is challenging.

However, Knorr-Bremse was also one of the first corporate members of the PLM Interest Group, and contributed to the development of the PLM Benchmarking Handbook in 2004. With the subsequent development of tools for PLM Self-Assesmment, and the recently-published PLM Governance Standard, the working material now exists to make this possible.

Discussions in December and January have confirmed the Governance Benchmark structure, and Knorr-Bremse will host a stand-alone Benchmark Coaching workshop at their headquarters in Munich in February or early March to confirm the scope and details.

This will be an international benchmark, on a scale and depth of detail that has never been done before in PLM. It is an opportunity for major international companies to quantify the strengths and weaknesses within their PLM landscape. As well as generating new PLM metrics and ROI tools, the collaboration will provide detailed sharing of PLM techniques and practices amongst the participating companies.

Companies based anywhere in the world are welcome to take part, and participation is being arranged now. Full details are available on the PLMIG web site or by contacting me at

You can get an "inside view" of the Governance Benchmark methodology, and learn how to apply the latest PLM best practices, at the PLM Standards Implementation Workshop in Munich on 22-23 February. There is still time to register.

The Workshop will focus on how to apply the extensive range of new PLM material generated by the PLMIG event series in 2011, featuring:-

The Workshop Agenda is integrated with that of the PLM Innovation 2012 Congress to give participants access to the networking opportunities of the host event.
