PLM Defines ERP
by Roger Tempest
As part of the preparation for the imminent series of PLM-ERP workshops I looked around on the Internet for a definition of ERP - and couldn't find one.

Can this be true? We know that PLM is difficult to define, but there are several published definitions, and some have gained traction by being widely quoted. ERP has been around a lot longer, so surely there is some widely-accepted reference text that can be used.

Surprisingly, it seems not. When a salesman from a well-known vendor called (because I had been looking on their web site) his first reaction was bemusement, and his second was: "ERP is what we sell." When I asked him to define what he sold, he made his excuses and dropped the call.

The ERP community may be able to get by without a formal ERP definition, but the PLMIG workshops cannot. Therefore the PLMIG, on behalf of the PLM community at large, proposes the following definition of ERP:-

"Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is the implementation and management of an integrated suite of software applications that support and automate the operational functions and processes of a manufacturing enterprise.

ERP may include applications covering Financials, Human Resources, Sales and Service, Procurement, Logistics, Manufacturing Management, Master Data Management, BOM Management, Inventory, Asset Management, Quality, and Planning. Supply Chain Management(SCM) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) may be integrated within ERP, or implemented separately. An ERP solution is normally underpinned by a common, integrated database.

As well as posing considerable technical challenges, an ERP implementation must meet the strategic and business needs of the enterprise."

This definition is likely to be reshaped as the Workshops progress, and if an existing definition is not discovered, this might even become the new de facto standard. You may have your own ideas about its accuracy, and comments are welcome via

The Open Group's Quantum Lifecycle Management (QLM) Project decided in May 2011 to adopt the Universal Data Element Framework (UDEF). The QLM Project team is currently in the process of adding UDEF to the XML schema of their System Object Model. A draft of the System Object Model XML schema is expected to be available in October at The Open Group Conference in Barcelona.

Many have asked - what is QLM?

To provide a perspective of the type of information (the Internet of Things) and role that a deployed QLM solution will offer, you should read a recent article in Information Week.

The article describes the challenges that a railroad company faces to reduce the risk of derailments and their approach for gathering sensor data and performing the associated analytics.

Although the railroad company is not a QLM adopter (since QLM is not yet available), the article describes the role that QLM could play in any company that decides to adopt QLM once it is available. QLM adopters will expect to reduce costs due to better information leading to better lifecycle decisions.
