International PLM-ERP Workshop Series Finalised
by Roger Tempest

Less than four weeks after the initiative was announced in 2PLM, (see "How to Fix PLM-ERP"), the workshop series has been finalised.

The first Workshop will be held in the UK in September, hosted by Altran Xype at their offices in Filton, Bristol. The second will be co-located with the PLM Innovation Americas Congress in Atlanta, USA in October. The third will be hosted by ZF Friedrichshafen AG at their headquarters in Germany at the beginning of November.

These Workshops are not mere "discussion shops". The aim of the series is to resolve the whole subject of PLM-ERP, and to publish the results in a new PLM-ERP Handbook that shows the neutral, globally-applicable best practice.

Each Workshop enables its participants to work together in a 3-day format, combining their own real PLM-ERP issues with the latest theory to generate their own version of the Handbook. This deliverable of producing a new Handbook iteration each time focuses the discussions and drives them towards a conclusion.

Facts will have to be separated from myths, and a practical structure hammered out for the results. By the end of the series we will have captured the best PLM-ERP experience from both sides of the Atlantic and forged it, through three iterations, into the definitive working manual.

Everyone who takes part in a Workshop will receive the results of the whole series. User companies may find it valuable to send colleagues from both backgrounds. The Workshops can be used as a means of resolving participants' most intractable PLM-ERP issues, while generating a common understanding in the process. Vendors, integrators and consultants are also welcome, as we are looking for involvement from all parts of the industry.

Registration for all three events is now open, and more details can be found on the PLMIG web site.

Financial Benefits of PLM
by Scott Cleveland

My Thoughts....
It's understood that shorter design times and faster change cycles yield better products and earlier product introductions. In turn, these result in collecting revenues earlier and over a longer product life.

Accelerate Release and Change Cycles
One large benefit of PLM is the efficiency gained when processing product releases and changes. (A non-automated process requires: extensive document collection and copying efforts; repetitive and error-prone change order creation; and relying on time-consuming interoffice mail - or on an engineer or change analyst walking the package from office to office. Communicating with supply chain partners may lead to express parcels, insecure or lost mail, irrelevant or incorrect file attachments, and a host of other time-wasters.)

Every PLM implementation that I have worked on reduced the cycle times for changes by an order of magnitude. For example, a 50 day change cycle time was reduced to 5 days. And emergency changes often were completed in a matter of hours.

The Impact of Time to Market
The lifecycle of a product starts when you begin to collect revenues and usually ends when there are no longer profits. Competition will determine the end of a product lifecycle. If you can get to market 90 days ahead of the competition, you will have 90 competitor-free days to collect revenues. A bigger headstart on the competition may make it hard for them to even enter the market.

If your company is one of those working with a 50 day [or so] cycle time for changes, your company is losing about 45 potentially revenue-generating days.

His Thoughts....
In Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation, John Stark identifies other financial benefits of PLM including:
  • increase the number of customers. For example, by reducing the overhead activity of product developers, PLM allows them to develop products for new customers
  • increase the product price paid by customers. For example, by increasing product quality, PLM enables customers to be charged increased prices
  • increase the range of products that customers can buy. For example, by improving product structure management, PLM enables more customer-specific variants
  • increase the number of products of a particular type that a customer buys. For example, by increasing product quality, PLM allows customers to dispense with second sourcing
  • increase the percentage of customers re-ordering. For example, by increasing product and service quality
  • increase the frequency with which customers buy. For example, by getting products to market faster and more frequently
  • increase the service price paid by customers. For example, by using PLM to improve the quality of existing services
  • increase the range of services that customers buy. For example, by using PLM to support additional services

Your Thoughts....
What's your opinion? Where do you see the financial benefits of PLM? And isn't it time to address these opportunities now?
