Global PLM Research - PLM-IRF Takes Shape
by Roger Tempest

Support for the initiative to establish a neutral PLM International Research Foundation continues to grow, with new academic contributions from universities in Finland, Germany, Italy, Romania and Greece.

KIIT University in India continues to be very proactive, by evangelising the concept through the vendor chain. For PLM vendors, the PLM-IRF is something that could easily move onto the radar and straight off again, if the vendors are focused too much on the here and now. When the first face-to-face meeting is called, the vendors should be ready and interested to take part in the debate. Detailed discussions with contacts who are aware of the potential of research to benefit PLM are therefore very valuable.

The IPLI Institute at the Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis has also come forward in a very positive way. IPLI is an organisation that could collaborate with or participate in PLM-IRF projects, and discussions this week about how this might work were very informative. They are also a potential host for a launch meeting in the USA, which would make it easy for North American organisations to participate in person.

With a potential first meeting in Brussels in January 2015, there could therefore be the potential to take the debate "live" to three continents very quickly.

PLM References
According to Google Scholar, as of October 27, Product Lifecycle Management: Paradigm for 21st Century Product Realisation, was the PLM publication most frequently referenced in scientific journal articles, technical reports, books and theses.

In recent weeks it has been cited in:

  • Citation #474; 27 October 2014; H. Zhang et al.; Sustainability Consideration within Product Lifecycle Management through Maturity Models Analysis
  • Citation #473; 24 October 2014; C. Levandowski; Platform Lifecycle Support using Set-Based Concurrent Engineering
  • Citation #472; 17 October 2014; S. Gallasch; The Anticompetitive Misuse of Intellectual Property Rights in the European Pharmaceutical Sector
  • Citation #471; 16 October 2014; L. Horvath et al.; Systems Engineering Methods for Multidisciplinary Product Definition

Sustainability Consideration within Product Lifecycle Management through Maturity Models Analysis is published in the International Journal of Services and Operations Management. This paper, by H. Zhang, Y. Ouzrout, A. Bouras (University Lumière Lyon 2) and M. Savino (University of Sannio), stems from an Italian industrial survey, and is aimed to investigate and collect PLM functionalities by studying PLM maturity models and the TechnoWare, InforWare, FunctionWare, and OrgaWare (TIFO) framework. It also extends TIFO to a TIFOS framework by adding SustainWare to achieve long-term maintenance of the product lifecycle. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology is developed to help companies to choose the right information in the right context and time by applying the proper functionalities of PLM. A research framework to measure sustainability is also proposed to identify PLM component's sustainability level. The industrial cases conducted in two southern Italy companies prove that specific components of PLM application and business management contribute more to PLM benefits, and OrgaWare and InforWare are the weak points of the proposed framework. Traditionally, research on platforms has focused on finding ways to provide Manufacturing with a small number of parts to be able to increase utilisation of expensive production equipment. However, reuse of parts does not benefit all businesses, especially those where customer requirements continuously change. To cut development lead-time, other types of reuse are necessary.

The use of platforms based on core technologies and re-configurable systems as platform elements may provide the necessary support. They enable reuse on a more abstract level, reusing technologies, requirements and concepts rather than ready-designed parts. Platform Lifecycle Support using Set-Based Concurrent Engineering, a thesis by Christoffer Levandowski (Chalmers University of Technology), elaborates on support for working with the type of platforms that are integrated across the lifecycle of a product. It shows that platform approaches in literature today do not cover the need to support holistic platform development across all stages of a lifecycle. As a solution, configurable system elements are used to model platforms and the links between the lifecycles. The development processes and models may be further infused with set-based concurrent engineering to provide a framework for efficient development. These principles are integrated into the models and the processes to enhance the ability to manage the complex relationships within and between parts of the platform throughout the lifecycle. New drugs are extremely expensive to develop. A number of economic studies have estimated the costs of research and development (R&D) for a new drug to be several hundred million US dollars, with the highest estimate for a single drug being US$1.8 billion. Pharmaceutical antitrust is currently a centre of attention for the European Commission, with one decision against Lundbeck and Statements of Objections in investigations against Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, and Les Laboratoires Servier. The Anticompetitive Misuse of Intellectual Property Rights in the European Pharmaceutical Sector explores the specific types of conduct engaged in by innovating pharmaceutical companies (brand companies) and generic pharmaceutical manufacturers (generic companies) who extend patent protection beyond the life of the intellectual property right. In particular, this thesis by Sven Gallasch (University of East Anglia, UK) investigates pay for delay settlements and early entry agreements in the European pharmaceutical sector. Details

The Systems Engineering Methods for Multidisciplinary Product Definition paper, from the IEEE 12th International Symposium on Intelligent Systems and Informatics, is about the main information flow aspect of the new Coordinated Request-based Product Modeling (CRPM) method to automate the knowledge- and decision-intensive Requirements, Functional, Logical and Physical (RFLP) structure based product definition. BPM is a Discipline ....
by Scott Cleveland

Business Process Management (BPM) is a discipline. It's something that you do. It's not a product.

Fujitsu put together a poster on Business Process Management. In it, they say 'BPM Business Process Management is a discipline involving any combination of modeling, automation, execution, control, measurement and optimization of business activity flows, in support of enterprise goals, spanning systems, employees, customers and partners within and beyond the enterprise boundaries.'

I see a company as a collection of processes. At the very least, they have a process that starts with a quotation and ends with collecting the cash. Often, this process happens informally. A company may not have a process flow diagram to document this process, but it still happens.

Business Process Management
You don't need to purchase any software to document and improve a process. Whether you purchase software or not, the following path has worked successfully for many companies:

  • Document your process - You can draw a process flow chart on a napkin. You can document a process in text form. It's important to double check your documentation to make sure you have it documented correctly.
  • Measure your process - If you don't have any metrics in place, it will be difficult to determine whether you have improved your process. This also helps you show success.
  • Improve your process - You can look for non-value add activities within your process. If an activity doesn't make you more efficient or make more revenue, then maybe you shouldn't be doing it. You may determine that there's a better way to move through your process.
  • Measure the improved process - Measuring allows you to see what changes worked and what changes didn't work.

Business Process Management with Software
BPM software provides 2 key benefits: Control and Visibility:
  • Control: In a paper-based environment, everything is passive. You don't know whether an activity has been started or finished without someone manually notifying someone of the status. Who is the someone? How timely are the notifications? With software, the action of starting a task and completing a task is documented by the software. At any time, you can see who's working on what. You have a complete audit trail of all the activities within the process.
  • Visibility: In a paper-based environment, you may have a notebook or a spreadsheet with the notifications recorded. The accuracy of this is questionable at best. With software, you can query the system and see everything that's happening within your process at any time.
