Whole-of-life lifecycle management is set to become increasingly important. Already partly in place for complex, high-value products, it will become a necessity for the whole range of high to low-end products. Furthermore the principles apply beyond products and extend to service lifecycles and the lifecycles of people, animals, food, beverage etc. The EU PROMISE Project included 10 commercial applications that looked at the business and technical requirements, developed case-specific workflow and information flow models, and built an industrial-strength demonstrator. In each case, product knowledge gathered over different lifecycle phases was applied to a single lifecycle phase, beginning, middle or end of life. Each of these applications applied common processes for requirements analysis, workflow and information flow modelling, and technology selection. The design and implementation of each application was in accordance with the PROMISE Architecture, although not all elements were needed for each application, in itself a strong recommendation for the flexibility of the architecture. I propose to present a series of 10 articles, beginning in the next issue of this newsletter, in which I will summarise both the business and technical aspects of each demonstrator. Together, these articles will show the variety of product types, the different industries, and the range of business drivers involved. Three of the articles will deal with end-of-life applications:
Five articles will cover middle-of-life applications:
And finally, two articles will deal with beginning-of-life applications:
Closed-Loop Lifecycle Management (CL2M) has been a significant outcome from PROMISE, and these short articles should be of interest to PLM customers, solution and technology providers, and consultants as a means to identify business opportunities in their own marketplace. Promise Innovation, together with its partners, remains the leader in analysing, defining and recommending CL2M solutions.

| Inaugural QLM Consortium Meeting by David Potter |
The Quantum Lifecycle Management (QLM) Consortium, which is forming under The Open Group, has been endorsed in the latest European IMS Newsletter, and is already attracting the attention of some major global participants in PLM.
If you are interested in the future of PLM or the Internet of Things, you will want to participate in this new consortium to shape the development of an open and trustworthy information exchange environment for whole-of-life lifecycle management. The Inaugural QLM Consortium Meeting (to be held Tuesday April 27, 2.00 - 5.30 pm) will be a working session during The Open Group's Rome Conference to plan the launch and initial scope of work of the consortium.
We need innovators, enthusiasts, committed individuals and interested commercial partners to join the work of the consortium to help develop the framework. Please register your interest at the following link: http://www.opengroup.org/qlm/ and you will be contacted.
David Potter is Chief Technical Officer, Promise Innovation International Oy, and former Chairman of the Project Steering Board of the EU PROMISE Project. |
