PLM - One Professional World
by Roger Tempest
The Professional PLM Initiative is now live. It will produce all of the documents, specifications and tools that are necessary to define the scope and activity of Professional PLM.

All of this material will be used, reviewed and improved by Correspondents and Associates from around the world, as part of a structured programme that will run through till the end of 2018.

The discussion process that gave rise to the Professional PLM Initiative has been liked by PLM practitioners from over 30 countries. It is likely that the geographical spread of Correspondents and Associates will be equally wide.

However, there will only be one new Body of Knowledge. The principles, guidelines, standards and methods to produce Professional PLM are universal - they will apply to every professional practitioner, and to every implementation that is run in a professional way.

This means that PLM practitioners from anywhere in the world can take part in the Initiative and access the same single collection of best-practice material - and this, in turn, can create a single coherent professional world for the PLM industry.

Wherever you are, whatever your PLM role, whatever your company, however remote or unappreciated your work may seem; you can bring this new professionalism into your working environment as a Correspondent or Associate.

The full phasing and timeframe can be seen on the PLMIG web site, together with details of how to take part.

Finally, the cost of participating and receiving deliverables addressing key areas such as: PLM Roles & Skill Sets; Maturity & Metrics; Certification & Training. Less than the cost of 1 day of a PLM consultant, or 1 day at a PLM industry event.

Roger Tempest is co-founder of the PLMIG.

Participation in the November "Basics of PLM" Online Course
The Geneva PLM Institute decided that, to celebrate the first anniversary of the online Basics of PLM course, it will offer some financial support to five participants in the November 2017 and December 2017 editions of the course.

The Basics of PLM course was launched at the end of last year. The Course Fee ($800, €800) was set with participants from developed countries in mind. However, interest in participating was shown by potential participants from less developed countries. They pointed out that some educational organisations in developed countries offered them discounted rates, and asked if such facilities were available. Similar requests were received from people between jobs, and Millenials looking for their first job.

As a non-profit educational organisation convinced of the importance of PLM, the Geneva PLM Institute wanted to find a solution. It sees the need for PLM throughout the world, and would like to play its part in helping people everywhere to acquire PLM skills.

As the number of participants is limited, requests will be addressed in the order in which they're received. For more details, please use the Contact Form here.

The November 2017 session of the course will start on Monday 6 November 2017 and will run until Friday 5 January 2018.

This Cloud-based course, available anywhere, available 24/7, gives an introduction to PLM from a multidisciplinary business perspective. It aims to help people participate more fully in a company's PLM Initiative and other PLM activities.

Tips for PLM Implementation Success
by Scott Cleveland
All of the successful PLM implementations that I have been involved with have had the following in common.

They started with a vision for their solution. If the world were perfect, what would the solution look like?

They found a champion to lead them through the project. This doesn't have to be a VP, but the champion should be held in high regard.

They paid attention to Company Politics. They gained executive buy-in.

They gathered their requirements for their PLM solution. They cobbled the requirements into a requirements document.

They managed to avoid scope creep. A large killer of these kinds of projects is scope creep.

They developed a comprehensive Project Plan. They made change requests move through a change process.

They appointed a strong project manager and recruited an active user group.

They gathered user input to the solution and had the users do preliminary testing.

They managed culture change. Users will be using new software. They may be dealing with procedure changes. Change is difficult for some.

They managed expectations. The champion should set realistic expectations.

Everyone was happy when expectations were met.

Next Step
I will be hosting a focus group on the topic of understanding PLM requirements at PI PLMx in Fort Worth on 17 October @ 12:20 in room 4. I will have time for a meeting, contact me if you would like to meet.
